Everything You Need to Know About UTV Headlights
Headlights are an important part of your UTV. As a basic safety feature, you should know how to keep them clean and in good working order, as well as what options you have in regard to upgrades. That is why Tracy Motorsports has created this guide to everything you need to know about UTV headlights.
Does Your UTV Need Headlights?
If you do not plan on making your UTV street legal or only trail ride during the day, you may question if your side-by-side needs headlights at all. However, even if you fall into these categories, there are still situations like fog or rain that can also result in limited visibility. Because of this, headlights are a basic safety feature rather than a tacked-on luxury, so you should not forgo them under any circumstance.
Choosing Headlights
Halogen and LED Bulbs
Halogens and LED bulbs are the most common types of UTV lighting. While halogens are cheaper and come standard, LEDs make up for being more expensive by being brighter and more efficient. However, if you switch from halogens to LEDs, you may have to switch out the reflector bowl as well.
Projector Headlights
While most UTVs utilize traditional reflector headlights, you may choose to install projector headlights for even greater visibility. Projector headlights are compatible with high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs and are generally brighter and less likely to blind other trail riders, making them an upgrade well worth looking into.
Custom
If you are the kind of person who loves to personalize your UTV, consider installing custom lights for that extra touch.
Cleaning Your Headlights
Even the brightest bulb can’t shine through caked-on grime. You can choose to use a headlight restoration kit to clean your UTV’s headlights, but in many cases, baking soda and vinegar or a non-gel toothpaste will work just fine. For particularly persistent problems like highly oxidized plastic, a service appointment may be needed.
When to Change Them?
How often you will need to change out the bulbs depends upon the bulb type and how often it is used. Every two years is a good rule of thumb, though you should always consult and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
