How to Prevent Seasickness on Your Boat
If you’ve ever been out on the water on a lovely day, only to be suddenly waylaid by a bout of nausea and dizziness, then you know how much seasickness can ruin a boat outing. When you become seasick, you’re experiencing a form of motion sickness that results from an imbalance between feedback from your inner ear (which helps you stay upright) and your eyes, which causes all sorts of problems. Seasickness can strike anyone at any time, even the most seasoned sailor, so it’s a good idea to have some preventative measures in place before your next boat trip.
Don’t Drink Alcohol
Alcohol is a dehydrating substance that can make you feel nauseated all on its own, so it really doesn’t make sense to drink before or during a boat outing if you’re prone to seasickness. Stick to water, tea, or ginger ale while you’re out on the water to keep yourself hydrated and stave off nausea, and save that ice-cold beer for when you’re back on land.
Snack Lightly
If you avoid eating entirely, you are more likely to suffer the effects of seasickness because you may become lightheaded from low blood sugar. Instead, keep some soothing snacks available that won’t upset your stomach, but will keep you sated. Good options include bananas, granola, trail mix, crackers, applesauce, and toast.
Watch the Horizon
Staying below deck or within a cabin can make your seasickness worse because you’ll only be able to see and feel the pitching of the boat in the water. Instead, climb up on deck and focus on a stable point in the distance, such as a lighthouse or rocky point.
