History
Yamaha Motor Company, an offshoot of the larger Yamaha Corporation, started manufacturing motorcycles and motorcycle engines in the 1950s. By the 1980s, they were ready to plunge into the burgeoning ATV market, designing and releasing a three-wheeled model. However, the inefficiency and safety issues surrounding three-wheeled ATVs led to the development of four-wheelers, and Yamaha released their first four-wheeled ATV in 1985. By 1990, the company had phased out their three-wheelers entirely.
Now that the issue of wheels was settled, Yamaha could turn its focus to other matters, such as how to make their models suitable for different riding conditions. By 1987, the company released its first sand-suitable ATV. Other innovations along the way included better transmission systems, higher towing capacities and larger engines. Performance and handling remain top priorities for Yamaha ATVs, but the company doesn’t forget about style, either! These vehicles look as good as they feel to ride.

Classifications
Yamaha divides up its ATVs into two primary categories: utility and sport. Utility ATVs are better for hard labor tasks, while sport ATVs are suitable for recreational riding.
The utility ATVs are built tough and tend to be larger than their sporty counterparts. They have high towing capacities, upwards of 1,300 pounds in some cases. Their bigger wheels and stronger chassis help these vehicles to navigate difficult terrain on challenging work sites. While these models are not as agile as the sport ATVs, they are perfect for use on the farm, at the construction site or in other heavy industries.
Meanwhile, the sport ATVs can handle rough trails and get up to high speeds. They are lithe and agile, capable of going for hours at a time. Easy handling is a priority, since these ATVs have to be equally engaging for beginners and experienced riders. To that end, intuitive control systems are made to be easy to use so you feel like you have full control over your vehicle at all times.
